Something Greater

written by: Carissa Waggoner

Do you ever feel as if you were made for something greater than the life you are now living?

God did design us for great things. These things could be across a continent or in our own home towns.

The common denominator for the people like Moses, Abraham, Elijah, Peter and Paul was that they did 3 simple things.

First, they surrendered. They had the willingness to go. Secondly, they were obedient to step out in faith. Third, they trusted God with the results.

Many times God even spoke of the results that would not be what you would expect, yet God sends anyways. This is where we lean not on our own understanding.

Isaiah 6:8
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

Proverbs 3: 5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

God’s plans for us are not mediocre. They involve being vessels for God’s changes in others to give them transformed lives. Transformation by God begins when we know these simple truths and read on to learn the full Gospel.

Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

John 3:16-17
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

1 John 4:19
19 We love because he first loved us.

1 Timothy 2:3-4
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

When we share and demonstrate these truths, we are part of something greater. Imagine partnering with the God of the universe to bring seeds of salvation to those around us, saving someone from death’s grip.

I would also like to add. We put limitations on ourselves. We bog down our schedules with selfish desires or busyness that are distractions and hinders in our effectiveness for God to work through us. We need to be simply willing, to let go of what stands between us and the something greater that God has for us. We step out in obedience and have faith in the results to God’s sovereignty.

Every now and then, we need to reflect on what hinders us from stepping out in faith. It could be distractions or an ongoing sin we need to repent of and hand over to Jesus. We might even be holding onto a hope that binds us to our own plans rather than God’s. Let it go. Be who God designed you to be; be courageous and step out in faith. God has a plan for each of us. His will is the same for all; His plans may differ, but in all of them, we are to live for Him, glorify Him, and show love to others as He does to us.

God meets us where we are; we don’t need to be perfect to approach Him. He provides our righteousness through Christ, not our actions. We can come as we are, inspiring others to do the same. Being open about our weaknesses allows God’s light to shine through us, and Christ’s strength is revealed in our vulnerabilities. God’s love transforms us, starting with the truth and the Holy Spirit’s work in our hearts. Our renewed minds lead to growth, helping others recognize their need for salvation through Christ. We are meant for more than ourselves, having taken up our cross and allowing Christ to live in us.

Meet others where they are; allow the Holy Spirit to change in His time and way. Trust God’s divine plan for others and the plans He gives you.

There is no greater joy than to see the dead come to life through Christ Jesus. An everlasting future secured by the Holy Spirit in another’s life. The angels rejoice, and we do as well.

Allow Jesus to be the example. He went to the sick, the brokenhearted, the liars, and the thieves. He didn’t just hang around those of polished appearance. God pulls us out of the miry pit.

Psalm 40:20
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
    out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.

If Jesus is willing to go there, we should be humble enough to follow. He ate with the less fortunate and washed His disciples’ feet, exemplifying servitude and love. He scorned polished appearances and valued a contrite heart over outward looks, for it is the heart that God sees, not man’s appearance.

Matthew 9:10-13
10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

1 Samuel 16:7
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Should we choose the emptiness of living for ourselves or the fullness of living for Christ?

We are one family of believers. We do not have to step out alone, as we can join together to support those who are hurting, at rock bottom, or questioning their lives. Be the hands and feet. Go where Jesus would go and love those He would love.

If you believe God is calling you to something greater, be willing to go where He calls and say, “send me.”

He will make you into something greater, to do something greater for someone who needs something greater, the love and salvation of Christ Jesus!

John 14:12
12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

Prayer:

God our Father, we know that you created us to do great things. You have given us everything we need. As you developed Peter into the rock of the starting church, you will do a continuous work in us. Our experiences are growing us in character and perseverance. Our troubles help us to become more compassionate to others. You equip us with everything we need to do your good works. Our previous circumstances give us insight and wisdom to help others. You have us exactly where you want us to be. We are always in training, being transformed into the likeness of Christ. We thank you for that. You love us so much that we are not kept in the miry pit, but that you pull us out. You clean us up and give us a plan and purpose to help others who need you. We can do nothing without you, Lord. May we go where you send us. May we be brave, trusting that in faith you have us and you will not fail. May we glorify you in all we do. May we be your hands and feet. May we be set apart for something greater than ourselves and what we have made our lives to be. Help us to let go of things that hinder us. Help us to stay focused on you and not the distractions and heavy yokes we put upon ourselves. May we be transformed by your Holy Spirit to become something greater, to do something greater for those that need something greater, which is you, Lord Jesus. In Jesus’ Name, I pray! Amen!
